To increase or not to increase tariffs for freight rail transport

On 14 March 2025, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine held an ‘Hour of Questions to the Government’.

In response to a question from MP V.V. Kreidenko (Servant of the People political party) regarding the current activities of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, the Prime Minister of Ukraine D.A. Shmyhal said, in particular:

“With regard to freight transportation, we agreed that Ukrzaliznytsia will work with business. For the part of products and goods where Ukrzaliznytsia has an objectively unprofitable tariff, they should reach an agreement with the business and bring this tariff into profit, or at least into the cost price. We have agreed that they will come to the Government with a decision on the financial plan in the next week and a half.”

As you know, at the end of last year, Ukrzaliznytsia prepared proposals to increase freight tariffs by 37% and submitted them to the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.
